What is IRP Apportioned Plate Registration?
The International Registration Plan (IRP) is a reciprocity agreement between the 48 contiguous U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and Canadian provinces. Instead of buying separate state registrations, an apportioned registration grants your vehicle legal authority to travel through all member jurisdictions under a single license plate and cab card. Fees are calculated based on the percentage of total distance operated in each state.
Vehicle Qualification Requirements
Commercial motor vehicles operating interstate must register for IRP apportioned plates if they meet any of the following standards:
• Power Units (Tractors): Gross Vehicle Weight over 26,000 lbs with 2 axles operating in interstate commerce.
• Heavy Combination Fleets: Combined Gross Weight over 26,000 lbs with 2 or more axles operating in interstate commerce.
• Multi-Axle Commercial Power Units: 3 or more axles at any registered weight operating in interstate commerce.
